Mebane Early Literacy Center

Professor Paola Pilonieta reading with elementary students

The Mebane Early Literacy Center at UNC Charlotte is North Carolina’s most comprehensive early literacy research, practice, and engagement center. Grounded in the science of reading, MELC advances literacy through applied teacher preparation, innovative research, and meaningful collaboration with schools and community organizations. We prepare future teachers to deliver evidence-based reading instruction with numerous school-based opportunities, provide educators and administrators with professional learning through the Mebane Early Literacy Summit, webinars, and resources, and support school and community networks to promote literacy engagement. Through this integrated approach, we help ensure that teachers are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and support they need to teach reading effectively, so that all students become skilled, lifelong readers.
