Knowledge activation and knowledge building are essential for supporting students’ reading comprehension. Yet, activating students’ background knowledge often occurs prior to reading, rather than throughout the reading process, and can sometimes lead to student misconceptions or frustrations. This begs the question: how can teachers effectively support students in accessing and applying their existing knowledge and experiences during reading? In this session, participants will learn about six evidence-based principles for activating students’ knowledge during reading.
