Title: Leading Literacy Lens: Morphological Instruction Promoting reading, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension in the elementary grades

Description: Morphology—the study of word structure—bridges word recognition and language comprehension. While phonics instruction helps students decode words, morphological instruction (prefixes, suffixes, and roots) connects those words to meaning. This session reviews theory and research supporting morphological instruction in elementary school, clarifies which morphemes to target, and outlines explicit and strategic instructional strategies that teachers can use to boost student reading, spelling, vocabulary knowledge, and comprehension. School administrators will receive suggestions to lead this work in schools.
